About Us

Our Mission
Our mission is to ensure that, no matter your age, family make-up or disability, no one is left to struggle with mental health, emotional well-being, or behavioural difficulties alone.
Our Journey so far……
Hi, my name is Mathew, and I am the founder and the Play Therapist at Horizon Play Therapy.
I created Horizon Play Therapy shortly after I became a Play Therapist in Wales because I saw a lack of understanding and recognition for play therapy. My family relocated to Cornwall, and I wanted Horizon Play Therapy, Cornwall, not only to provide therapy services but also to act as an informational platform so that the benefits of Play Therapy approaches could reach more people. This is why I have also self-published books to support children, families and educators.
My Qualifications and Experience
I am a British Association of Play Therapy registered Play Therapist qualifying from the University of South Wales with a Masters in Play Therapy in 2019. I have worked as a freelance play therapist in both schools, clinic and on-line.
Prior to becoming a Play Therapist I worked in Special Education and Mainstream schools as a teaching assistant for nearly 20 years. During this time, I undertook National Vocational Qualifications in Childcare up to level 4, an open degree with the Open University focusing on child development and a Masters in Autism at the University of South Wales. These experiences led me to Play Therapy as I saw, despite great desire, the unmet needs the children, parents and school staff had.
Since qualifying as a Play Therapist I have undertaken further advanced training to enable me to work effectively with adults and groups (Sand Play Therapy and Sand Story Therapy), People with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (AutPlay Therapy), people using on-line platforms (TelePlay Therapy) and with parents (Children Parent Relationship Training). I continue to undertake regular supervision, ‘mandatory’ and advanced training and personal therapy, to ensure I provide the best possible care to my clients and I am always interested to learn about new approaches.
